How much power do incandescent bulbs use compared to LED?

Here is a rule-of-thumb guide to power usage (watts) of various LED and incandescent bulbs: Wattage was tested using our Kill-A-Watt energy savings tool. This tool does not measure fractional watts, so to be fair we've rounded all figures to the next highest whole number. Thus, if a rating is 4 watts, you can expect your power usage to be 3-4 watts.

Bulb or string size & brand LED wattage rating and brand  Incandescent wattage rating
one C7 bulb 1.0 watt (it took 4 random bulbs in order to register 1 watt, and 6 to hit 2 watts). Bear in mind that  LEDs use slightly different wattage according to color. Imaginary Colours 5.0 watts
one C9 bulb 1.0 watt (it took 3 random bulbs in order to register 1 watt, and 6 to hit 2 watts). Bear in mind that  LEDs use slightly different watts according to color. Imaginary Colours 8.0 watts
25 C7 bulbs 9.0 watts Imaginary Colours 123.0 watts
25 C9 bulbs 9.0 watts Imaginary Colours 180.0 watts
70 C6 bulbs 2.0 watts Forever Bright
70 M5 bulbs 2.0 watts Forever Bright
50 Stars bulbs 4.0 watts Imaginary Colours RichWave
25 C7 white bulbs 2.0 watts GKI
100 C6 white bulbs 9.0 watts Imaginary Colours RichWave
100 M5 warm white bulbs 9.0 watts Imaginary Colours RichWave

My white lights don't match.  Why?

IMPORTANT: "White" (aka "Clear") LED lights are not at all like the regular incandescent lights! White LEDs are whiter--some say they have a bluish or purplish tint. Each LED bulb is manufactured individually, so some variance in color is to be expected. White LED lights are NOT the same as "Candlelight" LED lights! If you have questions, contact us before you order, so you're sure to get what you're expecting.

We are now using the following color names to eliminate a lot of the confusion people have had: Cool White, Warm White, Amber.

Cool White is sometimes known elsewhere as White, Winter White, Pure White, Clear, Snow White.

Warm White is sometimes known elsewhere as Soft White or Sun Warm White.

Amber is sometimes known elsewhere as Candlelight, Antique Candlelight, Yellow, Gold.

How many lights do I need for my tree?

A popular rule-of-thumb to use when planning how many lights to buy for your tree is this:

Depending on how sparse or dense you prefer your lights, plan on 70 to 140 lights per foot of tree height.

You will want to adjust your light use by the size and shape of the bulbs you choose. As a general rule, large bulbs are spaced farther apart on the string than smaller bulbs. Naturally, therefore, you will need fewer bulbs per foot of height if you're using the large C9 or G50 bulbs, for instance.

Is UPS raising their rates?

Any responsible business will adjust its prices according to its costs or else it will go out of business, and be no good to its employees, investors, customers, and even the IRS.

All costs must be passed on to the customer in one form or another (this is why increased taxes and fees on businesses are really just tax increases on the general public).

UPS is our shipper of choice, and they, like FedEx and the US Postal Service, have price increases every year. If you have to pay for fuel in your car and taxes to the IRS, then you know why the prices increases are necessary.

Incidentally, UPS is the world's largest package delivery company and a global leader in supply chain services, offering an extensive range of options for synchronizing the movement of goods, information and funds. Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., UPS serves more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. The company can be found on the Web at UPS.com.

Your store name is really weird. What's it mean?

"Inirgee" is a creative and alternative way to spell "energy." Our intent is to help people find creative means to conserve energy, as well as find and utilize alternative means of producing energy. So, "Inirgee" means "Alternative Energy."

Please note that we are phasing out the "Inirgee" name because people have found it too difficult to remember, pronounce, and spell. We have merged Inirgee with our other company, Imaginary Colours, and you will see that logo on everything, and often you will see both logos.

Will I get spam from you?
If you mean junk email, the answer is "no." On second thought, if you mean a processed meat in a can, the answer is still "no."
Currently, (08-03-11) we use only three "inirgee.com" email addresses: info, sales, and tom. We also use imaginary.com email addresses as well as LEDblimp.com and gmail.com.

Believe it or not, there are people out there who are able to send email to anyone they like and forge the return address to be from anyone they choose. And often this is done by computer program, so it's done amazingly fast, and with a zillion different "from" addresses.

Suffice it to say that if you get spam from "jgxty" at inirgee.com, it's not from us really. Don't even open it. But if it is from "info," "sales," or "tom," it's probably legit.

LEDs are brighter than regular lights, right?

First of all, our Premium LED replacement bulbs are brighter than any other LED bulbs we have found (and I have personally tested dozens, as I do the buying). These are the bulbs we use in our store year-round (they are lit 24/7/365). The easiest thing to do is look at our sample packs then decide if our bulbs suit you, and which color(s) you’d like. Links below.

However, incandescent bulbs are typically brighter than LEDs (contrary to what many people—including our customers—say). The fact is, they look brighter, because they look very different. Just like if you compare a household incandescent bulb to a compact fluorescent “twisty” bulb—they look different. It’s hard to know exactly which one gives off more lumens of light.

For decorative bulbs (e.g. Christmas bulbs), you don’t need to worry very much about exact lumens. You just need to be sure they look bright enough for your project. Lights on your indoor tree won't need to be as bright as lights on your clifftop home where your viewing audience is half a mile away. I think you will be very pleased with our bulbs. We carry the brightest bulbs in the biz, and have something which will fit your needs.

How does your quality compare to the big guys?

The stuff from big box stores generally does not have the quality that we do.  Additionally, we have highly-knowledgable employees, and our company President is available to speak to you or email if you desire. You may have to wait a day or two, but he will call you back.

Does number of LEDs dictate how bright a bulb is?

If you're talking about decorative-class lights (e.g. Christmas lights), as a general rule—for now—it is reasonably safe to say that if a bulb has three LEDs, it is approx. three times brighter than one with one LED. However, bear in mind that there are LEDs of different brightnesses. Being that this industry is relatively new, most of the manufacturers are using small LEDs in their decorative-class lights. In the future, you will probably see single-LED Christmas bulbs which are brighter than the 3-LED ones of today. However, that is not this year (2011). So for now, just go with the “more is brighter” idea until something better comes along (sign up for our LED-Mail and you’ll get notices of major changes like new and improved products).

Which are better? Your pre-strung C7 and C9 bulbs or your Retrofit ones?

The pre-strung LED lights are all single-LED at this time, and are 1/3 to 1/5 less bright compared to our Imaginary Colours Retrofit/Replacement bulbs.

For the brightest bulbs in the decorative class, choose our Premium replacement/retrofit bulbs in either C7 style or C9 style. You may buy new stringer cord for by the linear foot or by the spool (quantity discounts available) or use your existing stringer. You may combine our bulbs with your incandescents, if you wish. Be sure to consider the pros and cons.

There are two advantages to mixing LED and Incandescent bulbs:

1.       Spread out your costs.
    a.       Replace as many lights as your budget allows for this year.
    b.      Look at your last few years’ electrical bill’s increases during December over other similarly-cold months.
    c.       Take the savings from Christmas 2011 (money you would have spent on electricity) and apply it toward 2012’s LED Christmas lights.
2.       Create a unique look.
    a.       People tend to do the same things when lighting for Christmas. The displays which are most memorable are the ones which stand out as being unique. Think about the house that’s always 100% blue. Like it or not, you remember that house.
    b.      If you combine LED with incandescent, you will have a unique look. So, consider replacing 2 of every 3 bulbs with LED. Or replace just the blue and the red. Or combine incandescent clear or white bulbs with LED Cool White and Warm white.
    c.       Also, if you combine two sizes of bulbs, it add another dimension. Using mini lights (or LED 5mm Wide Angle bulbs) with C7 or C9 bulbs is very unusual, but looks great!
    d.      Sprinkle in a few color-changing or blinking bulbs.
                                                               i.      We have color changing which change the whole rainbow
                                                             ii.      We have on-off blinking
iii.      We have two-color blinking (changes red to green, or red to blue, etc.)

The down side of not replacing all your LEDs right away is simply the energy savings you are delaying (but again, let your decorating budget dictate this for you).  Also, there is some disagreement over whether you may combine LED and incandescent on the same string or not.

Will your LED bulbs fit in my existing socket stringer if I just remove the old bulbs?
You can use our Premium LED Replacement bulbs in your old stringer cords (assuming the cords are sound) without any modification whatsoever.

So, LEDs will save me money, eh?
You will save a very noticable amount of electricity. As a general reference:

A C7 incandescent bulb uses 4 or 5 watts of power, depending on the quality and brightness of the bulb. Our LED replacements use about 1/5 to 1/6 watt of power (5 or 6 bulbs-per-watt) depending on the colors of the bulbs being tested.

A C9 incandescent bulb uses 7 to 9 watts of power, depending on the quality and brightness of the bulb. Our LED replacement C9 bulbs use about 1/3  watt of power (about 3 bulbs-per-watt) depending on the colors of the bulbs being tested.

Do you have longer light strings? Everyone has 25-foot light strings, but I want to run, say, 700 feet, and don't want so many light strings.
If you want to use our Premium screw-in bulbs, we can make a single-piece light stringer for you up to 1,000 ft long. We don’t recommend longer than 100 feet for ease of handling unless you put the spool on a horizontal pole and unwind it like a telephone lineman would.

We can make any length you need, on 6-inch or 12-inch socket intervals. Green or White cord. We can also get 14-inch and 48 inch spacing by special order.

Some people prefer to have us make, say, a 37-foot, a 29-foot, and a 86-ft cord. Others would rather buy a spool of cord plus several male/female plugs and cut it themselves as they build their project. The plugs are easy to install yourself, and we have a video online how to do it correctly.

Theorhetically (not including wire resistance and variance in voltage and if I’ve done my math right), you can plug in to one, 120 volt, 15-amp circuit, a maximum of:

360 Incandescent 5-watt bulbs
Or
3600 LED C7 bulbs (estimated at 0.5 watts per bulb)

Note that in real life, you would not achieve this. There are too many variables.

Incidentally, if you’ll be using your new bulbs outdoors, you may be interested in our socket seals, which help keep moisture out of the sockets.

Do they make LED twinkle bulbs?
Yes! We have what the factory calls “twinkle,” but we call “blinking.”

We have (some in very limited quantity):

C7 slow change (slow morphing colors all thru the rainbow—listed above)
C7 quick change (hyper blinking colors; red, green, blue)
C7 warm white blinker (blinks on and off in one color)
C7 Red-Blue blinker( changes from red to blue—no tertiary colors)
C7 Red-Green Blinker (changes red to green—no tertiary colors)
C7 red-Amber blinker (changed red to amber—no tertiary colors)
C7 Red blinker (blinks on and off one color) <50 left
C7 green blinker (<50 left)
C7 blue blinker (<50 left)
C7 amber blinker (<175 left)
C9 cool white blinker
C9 warm white blinker

We also have many prestrung LED light strings with small bulbs (like 5 mm wide angle) which have twinkle bulbs.
